The Creation of the State Coin Rings

1. How it all Started

In 1999 The US Mint came up with a great idea to celebrate each State and National Park in the form of the .25 cent quarter. The last quarter to be commemorated was the 1976-1776 Bi-Centennial quarter.  While the US Mint wondered what kind of a design the quarters would take on, they came up with a way to involve the public by hosting several contests. In the end the US Mint would determine the final design and then the state productions. The U.S. Mint issued five new quarters for each year. They created them in the order that the states were admitted into the Union. The reverse (tails) of each quarter features a design related to that state. The obverse (heads) design shows the famous portrait of George Washington used on all the quarter since 1932. So that is where it all started for us as our next stop was to our local coin shop.

Coin Rings have always been around since as far back as the Egyptian coin pieces. So basically, it was about 100 years old when people started using coins for jewelry. The first pieces were centerpieces in an English body chain.

Fast forward to the Middle Ages we found that in the early 7th century Coin Pendants could be found in some examples of Anglo-Saxon beaded jewelry and rings made of metals mainly Gold and Silver.

In modern day use of Coin Jewlery people often ask us if it is even legal to make coin jewelry? the simple answer is YES!! Copying coins for jewelry purposes or altering them to create jewelry is legal according to Title 18 U.S.C., Section 331. This section provides criminal penalties for anyone who alters coins for jewelry purposes and represents them to be something other than jewelry. Coin jewelry has probably been around since the first minting of coins.

2. Why Coin Jewelry

Coin Jewelry ranging from Rings to Pendants received a much-needed new look and feel for both hobby collectors and patriots who wanted to pay tribute to their favorite State or Parks. So, for me that was a breakthrough as it gave us another way in giving our customers unique pieces of history, as well as commemorating their favorite States or National Parks.

3. Don’t Go For Too Much

Sometimes, adding these coin jewelry pieces to your style can be a fresh clean look with knowing that they are handmade. Layering is good, but sometimes too much can be too much, and it won’t win every time. If you wish to draw attention to your face and neckline with a solid-colored outfit and to keep everything subtle and straightforward, a statement necklace would be your upper hand.

4. Pay Attention To Your Earrings

Don’t you find it effortless only to pay attention to your earrings and forget about other jewelry pieces? You can go with only earrings and wear a lovely national park ring to maintain a balance on your entire look. Your earrings are in the zone of vision for everyone with whom you interact, so never forget to consider your earrings. You can choose from small studs or show off you dangle-drop earrings to show off your love for the style.

5. Play By Mixing Metals

Once, it was considered a fashion sin when people mixed their jewelry metals. But today, the trend is reversed. You can wear rose gold with pure gold, white gold with black metal, and diamonds with multiple metals to add classiness to your style. Mixing metals of different national park jewelry can be your favorite fashion hobby as it will count a vibrancy in your entire look. Try this experiment when you are wearing something, everything in one color and plain with no patterns and textures.
